EKU's April Emerson Captures Second State AM Title
Eastern Kentucky University women's golfer in April Emerson won the 85th Women's Amateur in the state of Kentucky, Friday, at Miller Memorial Golf Course Murray. Emerson, who is preparing for his junior season at EKU, also captured the State Am championship in 2009.Be able to say I won State Women have twice is such a blessing to me, Emerson said. Playing against some of the best golfers in Kentucky and out on top is a huge honor. I started to play in the Am in 2008 and looked forward to playing in the tournament each year. The ladies are so nice and such a fun week.
After a round of stroke play on Monday, Emerson entered the match play tournament as the seed 13. After sending 20th-seeded Lauren Hughes 3-and-2, No. 4 seed upset Emerson Christine Cash, a place.
On Thursday morning, down Emerson Murray State Universitys Morgan Cross, the fifth seed, 3-and-2. She returned in the afternoon Thursday and beat Ellen Kehoe, 4-and-3 to advance to the championship game.
Road Emersons title in 2011 proved to be very similar to its 2009 title run. Like this year, two years ago beat Emerson in the quarterfinals of the Cross. And just as in 2009, Emerson met Lydia Gumm in the playoffs.
Emerson defeated Gumm, 3-and-1 on Friday to win his second crown of the Kentucky State Amateur.
The last game I knew was going to be very close, Mr. Emerson. Lydia is an amazing player.
Both coming and going on the front nine, with Emerson in place by the turn. Birdie putt on a long 10-2 Emerson set up the 15th hole, where Gumm pulled back with a long birdie of his own. The Emerson 16 cut out of the bunker for a birdie to go back to 2-up and won 17 to win the match 3-and-1.
All week I hit the ball so well, says Emerson. I think I hit my driver the best I've ever touched. I had so much confidence with each swing.
